It all started with an accident
Like so many origin stories, the beginning of the Nicholas Law Firm starts with an bang. It was August 1980, and a young Jeff Nicholas was driving his self-owned ice cream truck home from Virginia, where had been selling ice cream to beach-goers as his summer job between college semesters. When an out-of-control vehicle shot through the cement median and directly into Jeff's path, well...the picture speaks for itself. His first major car accident, Jeff walked away relatively unscathed. However, he also saw first-hand the catastrophic damage that can result from a split-second mistake. Though he did not know it at the time, this accident would have a profound and lasting impact on him.
A few years later in 1987, Jeff was in law school. A non-attentive driver veered into his lane at high speeds and smashed into his front end. This time, Jeff was not so lucky. Suffering a fractured and dislocated hip, he would require a costly surgery and painful recovery. A former All State cross country runner, Jeff wasn't allowed to walk for months and it would be two years before he was able to run competitively again. It was after this second accident that Jeff knew how he was going to use that law degree: to help people through the difficult times like those he just experienced.

Established in 1989
In 1989, the firm opened its doors in the City of Torrington, Connecticut. In 1990, Jeff Nicholas took over the practice of venerated Litchfield attorney, Louis Erteschik, who relocated to Hawaii. Attorney Erteschik spent time in the Hawaiian legislature and currently serves as an Administrative Law Judge in the Department of Environmental Protection in the state.
Initially, the office was composed mostly of Jeff Nicholas and a few part-time family members. Now "Attorney Nicholas," Jeff continued to grow the firm through principles of hard work, client focus, and flexibility.
Through the years, the Nicholas Law Firm has helped Northwest Connecticut's injured and disabled with permanent offices in Torrington and Waterbury, though the firm briefly held offices in Watertown as well. The firm recently expanded to Bethlehem, Connecticut.
Attorney Nathaniel Walden joined the firm in 2011. He now heads the firm's social security disability claims division.
